SPAIN: The great SOLAR opportuntiy - 500,000 JOBS - no subsidies!
Maria Collado, Guillermo Benito Schmidt, Dr. Ingo Stuckmann - Zero Emission Think Tank 2016
Zero Emission Think Tank was formed in 2015 to support the Paris COP21 negotiations. Our main conclusion is that there is a tremendous economic opportunity in the world for renewable energies. Compared to Copenhagen 2009, the costs for renewables have since decreased dramatically, by 60-80% for wind and solar, resulting in a great opportunity now for < extremely cheap renewables! > (1)
As part of the research, we evaluated the opportunity for Spain:
SPAIN: 500,000 JOBS WITHOUT ANY SUBSIDIES!
Our approach is to compare the costs for roof-top solar in a proven market, Germany - with over 1.5 Million roof-top solar systems installed- with the economic conditions in Spain. The results surprised us: With 25% auto-consumption, roof-top solar economically works at only 5 cents, which is the average wholesale market price for electricity in Spain. Hence, roof-top solar does not need subsidies anymore ! We furthermore discovered an associated huge job potential: To install roof-top solar on all of the 10 Million Spanish buildings as well as 3 Million industrial buildings (3), we estimate this solar opportunity to create up to 500,000 jobs for 10 years!*
GOVERNMENT ACTION NEEDED: And what does it take to unleash this huge potential? Very simple - it only takes GOVERNMENT ACTION to enact a FEED-IN-TARIFF at only 5 cents for financing, i.e. the right to
i) interconnect solar systems at direct costs, WITHOUT CURRENT PENALTIES, and,
ii) a low fixed price for solar electricity sold to the grid (Feed-in tariff).
WIN-WIN-WIN:
Notably, such a feed-in tariff for rooftop-solar is a win-win-win:
-The electric utility wins - getting peak power for only 5 cents,
-The home owner wins - getting cheaper power after the payback time,
-Society wins - 500,000 jobs for 10 years without any subsidies,
This solar opportunity is a WIN-WIN-WIN for Spain with a potential for 500,000 jobs! Let the sun shine in.
Here is a second thought. Looking at the WORLD SOLAR MAP (2), Spain is green (red arrow), while most countries have even more sun, evidenced by the yellow and red colors. Therefore, this great solar opportunity is not only for Spain, but pretty much an unprecedented,
WORLDWIDE, HUGE OPPORTUNITY!
